READ:  Romans 6:11-18

We are saved by grace because of the death and resurrection of Jesus. The work on the cross has granted us access to God and we can now be reconciled to Him. Yay! But that is not the only thing that happened at the cross. Because the power of the gospel is not just a promise of eternity with God, but also a new life here on earth. And the new life starts when we finally realize our new identity: We are no longer slaves to sin

Before we put our faith in Jesus, we were slaves to sin. We had no choice but to sin. It was our nature. We put ourselves in the throne of our lives and acted in ways that pleased ourselves. But all of those selfish, prideful, vengeful, fearful, lustful and anxious choices only lead us deeper into death. We had no hope of saving ourselves, so Jesus came to do it for us.

Now that we have put our faith in Jesus, we are given a new nature. We are not slaves to sin anymore, instead we are given the opportunity to choose whom we will serve: God or sin. We have the freedom to choose whether we will live our lives in a way that leads us further into sin, or if we will submit ourselves to God’s ways which lead to life.

The problem comes when we put our faith in Jesus but continue to live like we’re still slaves to sin. We believe that our addictions and bad habits are unchangeable. We believe that our failures and wrong thinking patterns are part of who we are. We don’t know that we have been set free so we stop fighting temptation and instead give into it which leads us into more and more death. But there’s good news for us today: we are no longer slaves to sin! We don’t have to obey temptation or believe the lies of the enemy! We are a new creation with a new identity, no longer sinners but saints. And because we have been set free, and we have been empowered by the Holy Spirit, we can live in victory over sin by choosing to live our whole life for the glory of God.
