READ:  Romans 12:9-21

In the final part of the “Dear Church” series, the focus is on the practical application of deep theological truths in everyday life.

1. AUTHENTIC LIVING

Fake living is exhausting; trying to be something you’re not is tiring.  Authentic living is energizing.  It means being honest about your weaknesses, doubts, and pain, yet trusting God.  Jesus modeled this by being open with his friends about his grief before the cross.  Paul’s instructions include:  hating what is wrong, holding tightly to what is good, and honoring one another.

2. SPIRIT-EMPOWERED LIVING

This is not about “trying harder,” but an invitation to live the Spirit-empowered life.  The word for Spirit, breath, and wind in the original language is RUACH.  Just as God breathed life into the first human, the Holy Spirit is poured out to walk alongside us, guiding us into Christ-likeness.  This power enables us to serve enthusiastically, be patient in trouble, be faithful in prayer, and practice hospitality.

3. COUNTER-CULTURAL LIVING

Following Jesus means embracing a Kingdom Culture that clashes with the world’s values.  This means living the “upside down” life.  Instead of seeking revenge, paying back evil with evil, or cancelling people, we are called to bless those who persecute us, live at peace with everyone, and conquer evil by doing good.  This kind of living changes campuses, work places and lives.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Where do you feel most tempted to “fake it” in your spiritual or emotional life?  What might it look like for you to practice authentic living this week?
  2. Paul calls us to honor others above ourselves.  In your friendships or small group, what is one practical way you could “take delight in honoring each other”?
  3. Which part of your daily life most clearly remind you that you need the Holy Spirit - patience, prayer, love, endurance, or something else?
  4. Which of Paul’s commands in Romans 12:14-21 feels the most counter-cultural or difficult for you - blessing enemies, making peace, giving up revenge, or doing good to those who hurt you?  Why?
  5. Your church and campus are diverse, like the church in Rome.  What helps create unity across differences?  What threatens it?  How can you personally contribute to unity?
