The Coyolxāuhqui Monolith is a jewel in the heart of Mexico City. This magnificent stone disk, decorated with detailed images of a deity from ancient times, tells a harrowing story of Mixtec mythology. Made to pay tribute to the god Huītzilōpōchtli while humiliating the goddess Coyolxāuhqui, it represents the beliefs related to sacrifice and resurrection. Perishing at the hands of her brother the feud resulted in the continual cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The intricate carvings preserve this mythological event, encouraging us to delve into Mexica customs and faith. As observers appreciate this piece of art, they are not just witnessing an artistic stone slab, but also engaging with a society that appreciates the cyclical nature of life and death. The Coyolxāuhqui Monolith is a powerful symbol of Mexica's respect for their gods and old customs.
