The denouement. James starts work on his story of the century as the FBI comes and goes at Mercy Hospital, questioning him and Mindy Anderson, convalescing a few floors above him. The story has become a worldwide phenomenon. James can't escape the coverage as men in Hazmut suits go in and out of what's left of the warehouse. AUSA Mateo Morales and FBI agents appear on his doorstep, and Mateo gives him an offer he can't refuse: to get one last look inside the warehouse or, at least, the basement. It might give his book the ending it deserves. Or it might haunt him forever.

The climactic episode finds James, Sharon, Dr. Hodges, and Richard Bassett reunited on the roof of the warehouse. The FBI and a news helicopter are hovering not far from the scene that plays out beneath them. As Bassett's final plan to escape the claws of Justice ignites, a bullet from a sniper's rifle hurtles from the FBI Blackhawk. But an explosion rocks the building, and the bullet veers off course from its intended target.

As the storm begins, Ned rescues James from the cops, and the Chicago police and Chicago fire department begin to search the warehouse for a reported gas leak. An explosion rocks the building and the mouth of the garage collapses, sending rescue teams in to search the rubble. James figures out which rock Bassett has crawled under and speeds on Sharon's bike to get his final interview. Only it doesn't exactly go as planned.
