Episode 2: Whose Voice Is That?
Description:
Not every voice in your head belongs to you. Some are echoes of family, culture, expectations, survival, and even the things you once promised yourself you would never become. In this episode of DEBB Mode, Debb explores the difference between knowing what you don't want and discovering what you actually do, and asks one question that can change the conversation: Whose voice is that?
In this episode, I look back at the picture I had of my future when I was a girl and realize something surprising: I was very clear about what I didn't want, but that didn't necessarily mean I knew what I did want.
We talk about the voices we absorb, the voices we rebel against, and the voice that can sometimes become the loudest of all: necessity. Because when you're busy making ends meet, paying bills, taking care of people, and doing what has to be done, it can become difficult to hear what you actually want.
In this episode:
- How other people's beliefs can quietly become our own
- Why the things we rebel against can influence our choices too
- The difference between knowing what you don't want and knowing what you do
- How necessity and survival can become so loud that they start sounding like identity
- Why questioning an old message doesn't require blaming the person who gave it to you
- How to begin recognizing your own voice underneath all the others
- One simple question for deciding whether an old belief should still influence your life: Does it still get a vote?
Questions to sit with:
What messages have you carried with you without ever questioning them?
When you hear yourself saying I should, I have to, I can't, or people like me don't do that, whose voice are you hearing?
If money and practicality could go silent for five minutes, what would you want?
And when an old voice speaks up: Does it still get a vote?
You don't have to figure everything out today. For now, just start noticing who's been sitting at the table.
