Debt is now as American as apple pie. It seems no debt is beyond our consideration. Personal debt per capita is at an all-time high and the US National Debt topped $30 trillion for the first time in January, 2022. We are mortgaging our children's and our grandchildren's futures, which is not only unwise, it is immoral. Scripture does not declare debt a sin, but it does repeatedly warn that debt is dangerous, enslaving, evidence of misplaced values, and a significant impediment to living a generous life. President Biden's student loan "forgiveness" program is an example of incurring more debt while we whistle through the graveyard, thinking someone else will pay the piper. The future wellbeing of the U.S. depends in part upon how the American people come to grips with debt. For more Christian commentary, see rexmrogers.com.
