Decade Dames

The year is 1768! Philip Astley brings the first circus to town, the Anglo-Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth is born, Jean-Paul Marat learns why it’s not a good idea to take meetings while in the bathtub, and Steller’s Sea Cow just...just be nice to animals, y’all.

The year is 1767! The Beast of Gévaudan rampages bucolic France, the Devonshire Colic sweeps through (you guessed it) Devonshire, Maria Josepha faces her worst fear, and the Timuca people encounter the devastating and abusive European colonizers.

The year is 1766! Henry Cavendish declares what hydrogen is, James Christie makes a living selling household goods while the French Revolution rages, speech gets a little bit more free in Sweden, and James Quinn breaks the number one rule of the theater...maybe.

The year is 1765! Prokop Diviš, who is not Ben Franklin in disguise, also invents the lightning rod. Mary Bryant escapes Britain’s penal colony. Claire Lacombe fights for women’s rights. Abigail Adams Smith fights breast cancer.

The year is 1764! St. Louis is settled by Europeans. Ivan the 6th of Russia is treated terribly. Madame Élisabeth of France was killed for being a sister; and Sophie Marie Louise de Grouchy, the French Philosopher, was born!

The year is 1763. Thomas Bayes astounds and confuses us all so much that we have to discuss it twice. Pontiac’s Rebellion begins. Anna Maria Garthwaite is very good at heart. And Marie-Josephte Corriveau is found guilty of murdering her husband.

There's a lot marriages for the Tudor family, including Princess Margaret and Catherine of Aragon, Cyprus sees Caterina Cornaro as its last queen, and the Aztecs are producing all sorts of delicious foods with the use chinampas.
