You can’t really get to Christmas without going past John. Mark’s Gospel presents him as a preparer of the way. That preparation requires confession and repentance. John’s Gospel, presents him, as "a witness to testify to the light." He is not the light, not even a revealer of the light. He is a witness to the light, the light that comes into the world as Jesus Christ.
