December 7: Hunger Strikes in Arizona, Texas Redistricting, Stacy Abrams, and more!

Listen Later

This week, we’re focusing on the senate’s upcoming final session, and looking towards the gubernatorial primaries and redistricting plans capturing our attention in the new year:

  1. Chuck Schumer is facing lots of challenges as he aims to pass the Build Back Better bill and avoid extending the Senate’s final session of the year.
  2. The Justice Department filed suit over Texas’ redistricting plan, with arguments claiming it was created with discriminatory intent. Currently, white Texan voters make up 40% of the population, but have a 60% majority vote over the districts, so this is definitely a case worth tracking.
  3. We’re also keeping an eye on the gubernatorial primaries in Georgia after Stacy Abrams launched her campaign this week. On the republican side, David Perdue is running against Brian Kemp, and with a wildcard candidate also sticking around, it will be an intense race that may even get pushed into a runoff.
