Statement of NeedValvular aortic stenosis (AS) is a progressive disease caused by calcification of the aortic valve, with underlying pathophysiologic processes similar to those of atherosclerosis. The prevalence of moderate or severe AS increases with advancing age and currently affects approximately 3% of individuals aged 75 years or older. Although asymptomatic AS does not increase the risk of death, patient prognosis deteriorates substantially once the disease becomes symptomatic.
