outgoing left-wing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned Thursday that American consumers will pay more if and when President Donald Trump moves to apply sweeping tariffs on products from north of the border.
  • Trump told reporters in the Oval Office earlier in the day he still plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico at 25 percent rates starting as soon as Feb. 1. Trump previously threatened to impose sweeping new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China as soon as he took office but the tariffs weren’t applied on day one, as Breitbart News reported.

    • Stellantis, the Big 3 auto maker, announced it will be investing $1.2 billion in its Belvidere assembly plant and bringing back about 1,500 jobs there.
    • You’ll never know who really got it done if you listen to Illinois’ leadership.

    • As you may remember, Gov. JB Pritzker announced to much fanfare in October 2023 that the Stellantis facility in Belvidere, idled with layoffs just before the previous Christmas, would be reopened. But no deal was ever signed and, last year, Stellantis indefinitely postponed any Belividere expansion, blaming “market conditions.”
    • But that was before Trump, his tariff threats and four days of meetings last week between Stellantis, Trump and his team.

                Trump Puts Kibosh On Idea For Fed Digital Currency With One Stroke Of His Pen

                • President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday prohibiting federal agencies from establishing, issuing or promoting central bank digital currencies.
                • The executive order also establishes the Presidential Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, which is tasked with developing a comprehensive federal regulatory approach for digital assets, creating guidelines for stablecoins and exploring the potential establishment of a national strategic digital asset reserve. AI and Crypto Czar David Sacks will chair the group, and it will include leaders from the Treasury Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and other relevant agencies.
                • “The digital asset industry plays a crucial role in innovation and economic development in the United States, as well as our nation’s international leadership,” the order said. “It is therefore the policy of my administration to support the responsible growth and use of digital assets.”

                  • The executive order mandates that all federal agencies and departments submit recommendations to the group regarding the rescission or modification of existing digital asset regulations. It also explicitly repeals the Biden administration’s previous executive order framework governing international engagement in the digital assets industry.

                                EU Updates Digital Rules Requiring Big Tech To Allow ‘Reporters’ To Monitor Hate Speech 

                                • Under a revised code of conduct on online speech, the European Commission says that Big Tech signatories need to allow a network of “monitoring reporters” to regularly monitor hate speech notices.
                                •  
                                • On Jan. 20, the European Commission announced that updated hate speech guidelines will be folded into the Digital Services Act (DSA).
                                • The DSA is an EU-wide regulation that regulates the obligations of digital services.
                                • Part of this requires social media platforms to remove, and take other specified steps to deal with, what is deemed disinformation. The DSA fully came into force in 2024.
                                • Under the revised code, companies that are signed up must allow a network of “monitoring reporters” that are nonprofit or public entities with expertise on illegal hate speech to regularly monitor how the signatories are reviewing hate speech notices.
                                • They will have to review at least two-thirds of hate speech notices received from monitoring reporters within 24 hours.
                                • The EU said that the updated code of conduct, a voluntary instrument, builds on a 2016 code on “countering illegal hate speech online.”
                                • The EU also wants signatories to present “country-level data broken down by the internal classification of hate speech (such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation).”

                                                                                    • One of the biggest complaints I’m hearing – and this is a big development — is that several top officials targeted for ousting didn’t tell Curran or ANYONE ON THE GROUND involved in security planning for the Butler rally about the threats against Trump pre-J13. Those officials are: Cheatle, Rowe, and David Torres, the assistant director of Strategic Intelligence and Information, according to two sources with first-hand knowledge, according to a well-placed source in the Secret Service community.
