Deep Dive | Episode 10 | Business leaders lied (nicely) to Claudia Sheinbaum; the "new" investment promises have been around since 2023

Listen Later

The reality is that business leaders played the president Claudia Sheinbaum for a fool, and she played along. It’s not that she didn’t realize it, but she acted accordingly. And we have to admit: she was the only one who pointed out the elephant in the room, which is the issue of judicial reform, in this meeting with the most important CEOs. This topic has fascinated the "chairos" (left-wing enthusiasts) like mad beggars, believing the lie about the $20 billion in investment.

Now it’s time to set the record straight. What really happened at this meeting is that the CEOs announced investments of 20 billion pesos, and everyone was like, "Oh... what great news!" But let me tell you, my friends, most of that investment had already been announced back in 2023.

Once again, they didn’t just fool the president but also the Mexican people. The biggest project in this investment package is the gas pipeline and liquefied gas plant that the company Mexico Pacific is developing. This pipeline runs from Texas to Puerto Libertad in Sonora, and it represents an investment of approximately $15 billion.

This project is essentially the entire investment package, and although it’s good that it’s being reaffirmed, let me tell you that, so far, do you know how much of those $15 billion has been invested? Zero! Not a single cent has been invested since it was announced in 2023.

Another project that was reaffirmed, according to my notes, is the joint venture with Pemex for more than $10 billion with the Australian company Woodside Energy to develop a deepwater field, also announced back in 2023. Do you know how much has been invested from those $10 billion? Zero!

The same thing happens with another project also announced in 2023: Amazon Web Services in Querétaro, with an estimated investment of $6 billion to build a large data center. Again, it’s good that it’s reaffirmed, but do you know how much of that has been invested? Zero!

The only new thing in this entire investment package is Royal Caribbean’s investment in Mahahual, Quintana Roo. Supposedly, they’re going to invest $1.5 billion in a tourist development for the passengers of their cruises, with world-class amenities.

Unfortunately, the "chairos," "solovinos" (blind followers), and the "cuatroteros" (supporters of the Fourth Transformation) celebrated as if those $20 billion were already in the bag, but none of the investments announced in 2023 have materialized. The same thing happened to Samuelito, the governor of Nuevo León, when Elon Musk promised him a huge investment with the Tesla plant. Just like with the president, they fooled him, but Samuel made the mistake of taking it for granted, which has led to political consequences.

In short, there’s nothing, zero. That money isn’t in our hands yet, and what happened in Nuevo León with Tesla is proof that everything is still very uncertain. Business leaders are good at making promises, but when it comes to action, things are very, very different.

So let’s take it easy. To my "chairo" friends, who’ve been nagging with comments like "we already have $20 billion, and you don’t talk about it," I say: we need to be careful with business leaders and tread carefully when making these kinds of announcements.

Finally, it’s not that we wish bad things for Mexico. On the contrary, it’s great that Claudia Sheinbaum is talking to the CEOs, unlike López Obrador! That’s something to celebrate, and hopefully, the investments will keep coming because it’s the only way to ensure there’s money flowing. If we continue to rely on the government to drive growth, we’re in trouble.

Remember, López Obrador left the treasury empty and a huge deficit. So, let’s stay calm. That money isn’t here yet, and frankly, it looks very difficult for business leaders to keep their word, especially with such a complicated U.S. election just around the corner.
