The Neutral Ground Podcast with Dr. Joe Meyer

Deep Fake Problems, Selling our Privacy, and the True Price of our Data| with Michael Fienen | #22

Listen Later

In this episode of The Neutral Ground Podcast, we're joined by Michael Fienen, a truly unique individual with a lot of experience developing tools for the internet. In Michael's 25 years in web development, he's seen how companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have evolved over the years--and how they came to be what they are. We spend a good amount of time talking about the myriad problems with social media feeding negativity to people. We also talk about we undervalue our personal data, giving it away to places without much consideration to what it's worth. Finally, we talk quite a bit about why it's so important that we make a move toward building a more thoughtful, accessible internet. The more people that we can involve in complex problems that are facing the world, the better our chances are of defeating them. That's going to require some changes, but the good news is that we already have many of the tools that we need to do just that.

  1. Subscribe/follow the podcast on whichever platform you're currently using to listen to The Neutral Ground Podcast.
  2. Leave a rating and a comment wherever applicable. This will really help get the message out to more people. Let a friend know about the podcast by emailing them or posting an episode to your social media accounts.
  3. Visit the main website for The Neutral Ground Podcast at https://theneutralgroundpodcast.com/ and send me an email or leave an audio message for me with some thoughts or questions about one of our topics. I might end up using it on the podcast for all of us to grapple with together.
  4. Buy me a cup of coffee...err...I mean Ko-Fi at https://ko-fi.com/theneutralgroundpodcast. Donations are always appreciated and are useful to help fray the costs of maintaining The Neutral Ground Podcast.
  5. Finally, and most importantly, just be kind and patient with others in conversation. Try to model for those around you the difference between conversation and debate. Debate and dialogue are not the same things. We need more dialogue in our everyday speech, and we need to limit debate to where it is most needed and useful.
  6. Any one of the above items is equally important to me. I am genuinely humbled and moved by the feedback I'm receiving, and the support that I'm getting from all of you. Thank you
