Deep in the woods
past all civilizations
I stand in its cathedral
formed by trees vegetation
rising high in vast arches
older then man’s foundations
and in it’s cool realm I discover
some huge realizations.
All alone and unarmed
I’m no longer a master
I’m just one of its creatures
amidst all the birds chatter
and if their songs should stop
suddenly for no reason
and the forests fall silent
predators might be creeping
creeping.......creeping!
For here they rule the woods
some are hungry, not sleeping.
though they might be nocturnal
their sharp teeth are infernal
and they’ll grant me a long nap
that will become eternal.
Bears, Cougars and Bobcats
hunt their food and grow fat
and I am never intending
to become some bear scat.
But the deep woods it beckons
with a primeval call
to share its vast beauty
Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall.
And I do have a walking stick
that I’ll employ quick
made of strong, thickened oak
that just might do the trick.
Then I suddenly hear
the sharp crack of a branch
to the far left of me
as I slow my advance
and assume the position
the Marines taught to me
used on all deadly missions
crouch defensively.
defensively .....
Knowing full well it might be
a hungry chipmunk
seeking juicy, plump acorns
or a scent spraying skunk
But I quickly discovered
that my worst enemy
was a bit of tree falling
to its prey…gravity.
Then out of the deep woods
I soon made my way
but a part of my soul
was left back there that day
With my Great-Great Grandfather
a full blooded native
who was probably laughing
at how I grew evasive
over some stupid branch
that had frozen my glance
gravities happenstance
Somewhere far up above me
chuckling with the Great spirit
and as I got back in my car
I’m almost sure I could hear it.
But now out of
the deep woods
back in civilization
I still miss its cathedral
formed by trees vegetation
rising high in vast arches
older then man’s foundations
where in the depths of it vastness
I found some huge realization.
and some sweet recreation.
