Defending Grace (Acts 15:1-35)
There have been key moments in church history where Christians have needed to stand up and defend the heart of the Christian faith – that we’re not saved by what we do but simply by what God has done for us. One of those moments was the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15. As we celebrate God’s grace to us as a church and commit ourselves to proclaiming the gospel, we must ensure we get the gospel right, preaching “grace alone” and welcoming people from every nation who put their faith in Christ.
This sermon was preached at Cross & Crown, Penang on 5th May 2024.
Introduction: Defending Grace
Context
1. The Challenge to Grace: The Judaizers (1–5)
2. The Defense of Grace: The Basis of Salvation for all (6–18)
a. God’s choice to welcome the Gentiles (6–12)
b. God’s plan to welcome the Gentiles (13–18)
3. The Affirmation of Grace: The Council Decision (19–29)
a. Don’t trouble the Gentiles (19)
b. But require their real repentance & love (20–21)
c. Circulation of the decision (22–29)
4. The Impact of Grace: Rejoicing & Strengthened (30–35)
Conclusion
a. We must defend the gospel of grace
b. Christians are no longer under the law
c. Love is just as important as doctrinal purity
d. Grace builds the church
