The ninth episode of Defining Deviant introduces Highway 16 of British Columbia, Canada. This highway is also known as the Highway of Tears, due to the prevalence of missing and murdered women along this 724-kilometre stretch of road. Many of these women were Indigenous, and many more are known to have disappeared. Despite only 18 police-accepted victims, there are likely upwards of 80 victims, at the hands at numerous killers across several decades. Despite the continued push for justice for these victims, the government has failed to implement most recommendations made regarding how women can be safer. These recommendations are outlined in the episode.
