Defining What It Means to be Asian American

Happy AAPI Heritage month and Mental Health Awareness month!

I am so excited to share this episode with you all. I hope this will give you some new perception of the Hmoob and Laotian woman I have become today.

Being of two different cultural backgrounds has absolutely played a major role in my mental health and how I interact in the world. My entire life I have always struggled to understand how I can best identify myself. In my community, being born of a mixed ethnicity is not a common topic of discussion, and typically frowned upon. To this day, I continue to attempt to navigate how I can show my pride of both of my cultural backgrounds without dishonoring either.

Much of my identify was negatively impacted in my younger years. In my adulthood, I am continuing to learn ways to uphold my cultural traditions, as well as adapting to my own definition of being an Asian American. I have also struggled with the guilt and shame of not being more intertwined with my Hmoob heritage until having lost my dad 7 years ago.

One day soon, I hope to be more fluent in both the Hmoob and Laotian languages and culture in order to share that with the world, and my potential future children (or fur babies). I hope to pave my own definition of what it means to be an Asian American!

As always, thank you so greatly for tuning in! This was built on love, so let's please keep it that way!

xoxo
