Greg Barton is a typical Utahn who loves the outdoors. He rock climbs, he skis, and he loves to go fishing in Utah's Wasatch Mountains. But his adventure life was put on hold in 2025 when he was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer at just 31 years old.
Greg is part of a generation of young people who are being diagnosed with early onset colorectal cancer, defined as anyone diagnosed with the disease under the age of 50. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer incidence between the ages of 20 to 49 is rising by 3% per year. It's a noticeable and worrying trend, one that has made headlines and caused concern among clinicians and researchers.
On today's episode, we're exploring the rising rates of colorectal cancer in young people. Dr. Neli Ulrich discusses the reasons why this might be happening, as well as the research projects dedicated to improving prevention and care. Plus, we'll hear Greg's story—how he was diagnosed, how he's being treated, and what life looks like now.
