KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The thing you really want to be aware of is your audience; what do they like, what do they need? You also want to create a connection with yourself; what are the things you care about and why do you care about them? Tell an emotional story to tell people how you got involved with whatever it is you’re doing rather than just telling people what you do or intend to do. The story will engage your audience and will hopefully raise an emotional response in them to want to get involved with your charity/business/fundraiser.
  • My involvement is not so much in the video creation, it’s more in helping people to structure the information that they ought to share in their videos. One of my favourite experiences was making a commercial for my church with our pastors where we had them running around like secret agents. The idea was about prayer and we called them prayer warriors, so we had them answering phones and screeching off in their cars. It was a really fun experience to create a unique perspective on what it might mean to live in the shoes of a pastor.
  • There’s also inspiration and aspiration, it’s not always about feeling a feeling that the audience might feel, it may also be showing the audience a place they might want to be or go. This is one of the reasons why, when you go on Instagram or a website where they’re trying to get you to invest in something, they show you a lifestyle that you might aspire to. MTV Cribs is the essence of aspiration storytelling: You don’t have this now, but you could have it if you work hard enough. Inspirational is slightly different, it’s about moving from where you are currently – motivational speakers do this a lot.
  • As a child of about 2 years old, we had caretakers/nannies at our house and I often would hear them say that I talked too much or asked too many questions. After a while I shut down and stopped asking questions or speaking. For most of my young life I was known as a quiet, shy child who would rather spend most of my time in my room playing with trains than being at parties. It wasn’t until senior year in high school or first year of college that I had a conversation with someone and they said they saw something in me despite the fact I was hiding behind a keyboard in my singing group. They said I should be out in front of the mic leading people. After that I started a couple of my own groups which led me to get involved with radio and constantly being asked throughout my life if I was a ‘speaker’ or a preacher. Eventually, I intentionally decided to pursue it.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Dig deeper: You saw something and it triggered something inside of you. Why did that trigger happen? What is the personal and emotional situation that other people can relate to that allows them to connect with the thing you care about?’

‘Everybody has experienced pain, it induces empathy and all of us have some measure of that and if we infuse empathy into your story we get a leg up.’

‘One of the most critical things is how you surround yourself. All of us have moments of discouragement and imposter syndrome. But you’re the average of the five people you surround yourself with. There’s an energy that happens when you’re around people that are driven or that are in the direction you want to be. Complainers hang out as complainers. Celebrities tend to marry celebrities. Wealthy people are friends with other wealthy people. It’s a mindset.’

‘I believe that everyone believes something, in something or someone. I’m not at a place to judge the validity of someone else’s belief system. Ultimately, I believe we’re not alone and, if our goal is to be of service, then we have to find a way to move forward. That requires me to lean on something outside of myself.’

ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
