John tells the story of how his best friend Zach was unjustly targeted by his Company Commander and mercilessly hazed into disobeying a lawful order that cost Zach an honorable discharge and lost the right to benefits, such as the G.I. Bill and access to VA hospitals.  The same might've happened to John if a new First Sgt. hadn't intervened.  Yet, that unworthy Company Commander never faced justice because officers protect each other from the complaints of the lower enlisted, whom they are legally bound to protect from discrimination.  In the military, where there is no democracy, a chain of command that cannot be trusted is a detriment to morale, and therefore, the success of any war that military would hope to win.
