Denise Conroy: Unleashing the Power of Women CEOs
In the most recent episode of the Grow Your Side Business podcast, we spoke with Denise Conroy, a seasoned CEO who has worked in a wide variety of fields. Denise shared her story of rising through the ranks to become a CEO three times after beginning her career in fields as diverse as steel, health insurance, management consulting, television, the entertainment industry, retail, online commerce, and photography. She stressed her versatility and the ease with which she can learn new skills, something she thinks is possible for anybody, not only CEOs.
Conroy elaborated on her recent career change, describing how she plans to assist women, particularly those who aspire to positions of power in the business sector. The impetus for this came from her time as CEO of a specialized coaching and training firm, when she observed a dearth of female role models. As a result of this insight, she created a program to help women advance in their careers.
Conroy said that she actually found her initial customers, rather than their coming to her. After hearing about her success counseling a local restaurant through their post-pandemic business model makeover, additional women reached out to her for guidance.
Denise wants to build a network for women that welcomes and supports women from diverse identities and experiences. To that aim, she funds scholarships for women making career changes, with an emphasis on helping black women and other women of color succeed in the workplace.
Conroy shared some of her thoughts on the future of companies in this uncertain time as we wrapped off our talk. Her pitch to powerful men in business who believe in her purpose was simple: fund her. She added that a sponsor's responsibilities extend much beyond those of a mentor or counselor. To assist others develop and go ahead, you must be willing to risk your own reputation.
