The Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria and the Embassy of the Republic of Chile in Pretoria cordially invite you to the Departmental Seminar featuring a panel discussion titled: “The Evolution and Future Prospects of Feminist Foreign Policy: A View from the Global South.”
Sweden became the first state to adopt a feminist foreign policy in 2014. Despite Sweden withdrawing its feminist foreign policy in 2022, the idea and practice of feminist foreign policy has enjoyed considerable growth, with a total of 16 states either adopting a feminist foreign policy or pledging to do so in future, the majority of which are in the Global South. Additional noteworthy developments in this regard include the formation of the Feminist Foreign Policy Plus Group at the United Nations in 2021 (a joint initiative by Sweden and Spain) and the Declaration on Feminist Foreign Policy for Latin America and the Caribbean, which was introduced in March 2024 under the leadership of Mexico (the first state in the Global South to adopt a Feminist Foreign Policy) with the co-sponsorship of Chile and Colombia.
Join us as our panel of diplomatic practitioners and international relations scholars unpack and ponder the evolution and future prospects of feminist foreign policy in global
politics.
