Derek Hoetmer, a.k.a "Subway Derek," and I met in 2012 at the 46 Street Station in Astoria, New York City. Despite our different backgrounds and career paths, we were both 21 years old, in our first couple weeks of living and interning in New York City hundreds of miles from home. The circumstances bizarre, and if you know NYC culture, the likelihood of us talking on my podcast ten years later is probably less than a million in one. Not only that, but I actually flew to Kansas for Derek and his wife Bailea's wedding in 2013. I always enjoyed walking around the city with Derek as he pointed out different flora, fauna, and famous architectural structures along our path.
