Descending Into Greatness Week 13 / Be Watchful

Listen Later

This message confronts us with a sobering reality: we have an adversary who prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Drawing from 1 Peter 5:8-14, we're challenged to examine whether we've made ourselves easy targets by venturing away from community, neglecting God's Word, or allowing our minds to become clouded by anything that pulls our focus from Christ. The imagery is vivid and unsettling—just as predators in nature seek out the weakest, youngest, or most isolated prey, our spiritual enemy looks for those who have separated themselves from the flock or stopped paying attention. But here's the powerful truth: God doesn't leave us defenseless. We're called to be alert, sober-minded, and clothed in the full armor of God. This isn't just about avoiding spiritual danger; it's about standing firm on the foundation of Christ, even when suffering comes our way. The message reminds us that suffering isn't silent in Scripture—it's actually part of how God refines us, tests our faith, and makes us more dependent on Him. When we ask 'Why do we suffer?' we discover multiple purposes: to produce character, to destroy sin, to make us heaven-focused, and ultimately to show us our desperate need for Jesus. The encouragement is clear: this life is only for a little while, but the glory that results from faithful endurance is eternal. We're invited to stop trying to bear our burdens alone and instead come to the altar, surrender all, and truly follow Jesus.
