Antonin Artaud had tremendous influence on Tatsumi Hijikata, the co-founder of butoh. In this specific writing, one can not only notice the visceral nature of his writings, but one may be able to track one of Hijikata's quotes to this specific writing.

Hijikata is often quoted as saying, "Butoh is a corpse standing straight up in a desperate bid for life."

Artaud in this writing says, "Genetic fatigue, the feeling of dragging one's body about, the feeling of unbelievable fragility becoming splitting pain, a state of painful numbness, a sort of numbness localised in the skin which does not hinder any movement but changes the sensation within the limbs so that the simple act of standing up straight is achieved only at the cost of a victorious struggle."
