Fritzi can control everything but Paula and the tension between the two is drawn as tight as a drum. The scenery includes sprawling ranches, a very much out of place colonial mansion and the vast beauty of the desert. Mix in a notorious gangster, his insanely jealous torpedo, a love triangle, the town sheriff, some weirdly eccentric characters and innuendo aplenty. Once the sun brings all these ingredients to a boil youve got the backdrop for a noir setting like no other.

A Classic Crime Noir Rediscovered
Raven's head Press has brought this great Crime Noir Novel from 1947 back to press. I assume that the cover is new. If so the have done a great job when they commissioined the art. It follows the story and adds to the Noir feel.
I bought this book blind after seeing the art and description on a Pulp website. I thought is resembled a Hard Case Crime Book. If that is the type of story you are looking for I don't think you will be disappointed.
The story follows Paula Haller a 17 year old young woman who lives with her dominating strong mother who runs the the local town saloon. casino and brothel. Sheltered from her Mom's business Paula is a lonely woman who is friends only with adults. Things take a very Noir twist when Paula gets involved with a drifting pair of criminals. One man loves her and one man hates her. We have a past murder to solve involving a woman who looked quite a bit like Paula.
Author Romana Stewart writes a nice fast paced set of Hard Boiled prose telling an engaging story. Unfortunately she did not stay in this style of writing which she has a flair for but ventured in to realm of the Occult fiction. J. F. Norris does a very good introduction for the book following the authors career.
The book was made into a Full Color Film Noir movie called DESERT FURY, starring Burt Lancaster, Lizabeth Scott and Mary Astor. The movie is currently not available on DVD but is available in it's entirety on U-Tube. The movie is also recommended.
The book and packaging are very good and I would give it Five Stars. Raven's head Press is a small Print On Demand company (this is their 2nd book) the first edition of this book had way too many typos for me to give it the five stars but the publisher has informed me that has been corrected and so has my review.
Highly Recommended.
