Branding and marketing is on some levels inherently manipulative.  Good branding, however, will hide this from the consumer with clever words and the right visual cues.  What we are talking about this week is the effectiveness of these branding cues on a designer.  Do we notice that we are being told to think a certain way? If we see it do we go along with it anyway?
