James teaches us in chapter 4 that we all have desires that battle within us. And when we live for those desires we mess up our lives. The desires that battle within us are the reason for relational messes, financial messes, legal messes, moral messes, marriage messes.

The way to be lifted out of the mess is to humble ourselves before the Lord. As arrogance is replaced by humility, God says he will lift us up.
