Deuteronomio 9: No es por tus méritos que eres bendecido.

Deuteronomio 9:1-7:
“Escucha, Israel: Tú vas a cruzar hoy el Jordán para entrar a desalojar naciones más grandes y más poderosas que tú, ciudades grandes y fortificadas hasta el cielo, un pueblo grande y alto, los anaquitas, de los cuales tú tienes conocimiento y has oído decir: ‘¿Quién podrá permanecer delante de los hijos de Anac?’. Y sabrás hoy que el SEÑOR tu Dios es el que cruza delante de ti. Él es fuego consumidor. Él los destruirá y los someterá delante de ti. Y tú los desalojarás y los destruirás rápidamente, como el SEÑOR te ha prometido.
“Cuando el SEÑOR tu Dios los haya echado de delante de ti, no digas en tu corazón: ‘Por mi justicia el SEÑOR me ha traído para tomar posesión de la tierra’. Porque por la impiedad de estas naciones es que el SEÑOR las echa de tu presencia. No es por tu justicia ni por la rectitud de tu corazón que entras a tomar posesión de su tierra. Es por la impiedad de estas naciones que el SEÑOR tu Dios las echa de tu presencia, y para cumplir la palabra que el SEÑOR juró a tus padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.
“Sabrás, pues, que no es por tu justicia que el SEÑOR tu Dios te da esta buena tierra para que la tomes en posesión, puesto que tú eres un pueblo de dura cerviz. Acuérdate; no te olvides que en el desierto provocaste a ira al SEÑOR tu Dios. Han sido rebeldes para con el SEÑOR desde el día en que salieron de la tierra de Egipto, hasta que llegaron a este lugar.

En este capítulo vemos que Moisés preparó a la nueva generación para que entrara a la tierra prometida.
Moisés animó al pueblo, también les recordó que aunque van a conquistar una tierra llena de gigantes, es Dios que se las dará en sus manos porque Él lo prometió.
En esta ocasión también les dió un mensaje muy claro: esas naciones serán expulsadas por las injusticias que ellos han cometido y por la forma de vivir pecaminosa; no es porque el pueblo de Israel sea un pueblo muy justo y recto que merezca todos esos territorios como herencia.
Dios quería que tuvieran en cuenta que no es por sus méritos, sus virtudes o sus capacidades lo que los están convirtiendo como acreedores de las riquezas de esas tierras, sino que eran por dos razones grandes: por la maldad de los cananeos, los habitantes de estas tierras, y también por la promesa que Dios le dio a su amigo Abraham, de que su descendencia sería heredera de una tierra que fluye leche y miel.

Usualmente, como seres humanos tenemos esa forma de reaccionar parecida a la de Israel. Comienzan a salirnos bien las cosas, conquistamos metas, logramos objetivos, y comenzamos a adquirir riquezas, a formar una posición fuerte en la comunidad, y establecemos una marca sobre nuestro nombre y apellido; olvidamos quién es el que nos ha ayudado a alcanzar estos logros. Inmediatamente asumimos que hemos sido muy sagaces, inteligentes y capaces de hacer cosas inmensas, pasando por alto que el Todopoderoso es el que nos ha permitido tener fuerzas, salud y protección. Ha sido Dios quien nos ha usado como un instrumento para poder hacer estas cosas y para bendecir a nuestro prójimo.
Si lees todo el capítulo te darás cuenta que Moisés repitió varias veces a Israel que recuerden que no es por su justicia que vencerán y conquistarán. Al punto que les recordó al final todos esos momentos de rebeldía y de incredulidad que sus padres tuvieron delante de Dios, y Moisés tuvo que interceder por ellos para que no murieran.

Sigamos confiando más en el Señor, viviendo bajo su gracia, pidiendo su bendición todos los días, y manteniendo un corazón humilde, dependiendo de la misericordia de Dios.

Deuteronomy 9: It is not because of your merits that you are blessed.

Deuteronomy 9:1-7:
“Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, a people great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the descendants of Anak?’ Therefore understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and bring them down before you; so you shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to you.
“Do not think in your heart, after the Lord your God has cast them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land’; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is driving them out from before you. It is not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you go in to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God drives them out from before you, and that He may fulfill the word which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Therefore understand that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stiff-necked people.
“Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

In this chapter we see that Moses prepared the new generation to enter the promised land.
Moses encouraged the people, he also reminded them that although they are going to conquer a land full of giants, it is God who will give them into their hands because He promised.
On this occasion he also gave them a very clear message: those nations will be expelled because of the injustices they have committed and because of their sinful way of living; it is not because the people of Israel are a very just and upright people that they deserve all those territories as an inheritance.
God wanted them to take into account that it is not because of their merits, their virtues or their abilities that they are becoming creditors of the riches of those lands, but rather it was for two great reasons: because of the wickedness of the Canaanites, the inhabitants of these lands, and also because of the promise that God gave to His friend Abraham, that his descendants would be heirs to a land flowing with milk and honey.

Usually, as human beings we have that way of reacting similar to that of Israel. Things begin to go well for us, we conquer goals, we achieve objectives, and we begin to acquire wealth, to form a strong position in the community, and we establish a brand on our name and last name; we forget who it is that has helped us achieve these achievements. We immediately assume that we have been very clever, intelligent and capable of doing immense things, overlooking the fact that the Almighty is the One who has allowed us to have strength, health and protection. It has been God who has used us as an instrument to be able to do these things and to bless our neighbor.
If you read the entire chapter you will realize that Moses repeated several times to Israel to remember that it is not because of their justice that they will overcome and conquer. To the point that at the end he reminded them of all those moments of rebellion and disbelief that their parents had before God, and Moses had to intercede for them so that they would not die.

Let us continue to trust more in the Lord, living under His grace, asking for His blessing every day, and keeping a humble heart, depending on God's mercy.
