Daniel Creating the Habit to Pray
In Daniel chapter six we read about the King thinking about making Daniel a head over an entire regain and politically he had people who did not want him with that much power and so the people tried to find something against him. It turns out that his habits were the only way to find “fault” in him (though the fault was not in him but in the other men).
Daniel went to his knee three times a day and pray; he had been doing this for so long that it became a deeply rooted habit. He was not going to stop. (Learn more about prayer here.) The people had seen him do this over and over and they knew that he would not stop. So, they knew he would pray and so they went to the King and said he needed to make a decree that no one could pray for 30 days. Because of habit Daniel found the lion’s den. Seeing the Lesson in Daniels Story
If you grew up in the Church, you probably remember the coloring pages of Daniel in the lions den. I remember coloring them as a child. We see him safely standing in a pit or cave. God protected him. Eventually the king freed Daniel and threw his accusers into that same den.
That story is about how God protects us, but it is also a story about habits. God never commanded Daniel to pray three times a day, and that schedule was not him trying to show off. He simply did the same thing every day and people saw it. He was not going to hide it.
The Importance of Good Habits
Habits are so important in our lives. It is a way for us to grow. If we grow as Christians that is because we create good habits. The company we keep help encourage us or discourage the habits we want to have. The things we are doing day to day shows who we are.
So not only do we need to create good habits, but we need to keep them.
One of the common myths is that it takes 21 days to create a habit. Some habits might take 21 days, but other will not. (Why are the best habits some of the hardest to form?)
Let me ask you something, if you touch a hot stove, how long will it take you to form the habit to not touch the hot stove? It won’t take 21 days!
Habits that are important enough to us will not necessarily be easy to create, but the ones that have the most emotional impact WILL be easiest. So, think about the habits you want to develop and find ways to make them have the most emotional impact possible. That will aid you in their development.
