Devin Arrington Shares His Music

Listen Later

Pittsburgh violinist and composer, Devin Arrington, talks live with Anna Singer about his musical career and his new work.
Devin talks about his studies at Carnegie Mellon University under Leonardo Balada. He won the First Music Prize, which eventually led to his Carnegie Hall premiere with one of his pieces. Anna plays two pieces of Devin's. the first is "Heavenward" and the second is "String Quartet No.2 - Balm". He discusses the inspiration behind both pieces. He wanted to comfort people during the COVID-19 pandemic with "Heavenward", and was inspired to use a tanpura, an Indian drone instrument. This piece uses an alternative tuning system on the violin that compliments the tanpura. His second piece uses alternate tunings to enhance tonal color and harmonic possibilities.
Devin also talks about his studies at the SV Temple in Monroeville. He is currently composing a sonata for two violins.
He looks forward to his violin students performing on June 1st at the Third Presbyterian Church.
You can find more about Devin on his website and YouTube.
