This is the first class of the session and begins to cover the Ten Commandments and the First Commandment.

This sermon is based on Matthew 16:21-28. When Jesus described what it meant to be the Christ, Peter objected that things like suffering, betrayal, and dying should ever happen to Jesus. Jesus, then, rebuked Peter for having the things of men in mind, instead of the things of God. People still object to having Jesus on the Cross, and they do all kinds of things to displace Him from it. However, God has made the Cross of Christ our salvation, and Jesus calls us to take it up and follow Him.

In this session, Pastor Tritten talks a little about the history of hymnals in the LCMS and then gives a "tour" of our current hymnal, the Lutheran Service Book.

This sermon is based on the difficult text, Matthew 15:21-28, in which Jesus interacts in ways that are cold and harsh with a Canaanite woman before He heals her daughter. It is hard to be unwelcomed, yet sin makes us unwelcome in God's presence. It is only through Jesus' death and resurrection that the dogs beneath the table become the children who are welcomed at the table. And as children at the table, we drop the crumbs that draw people to Jesus so they, too, might be saved.

This sermon continues a series of sermons on Jesus’ parables in Matthew 13. We begin with the parable about a man who finds treasure hidden in the field and the one about the pearl merchant. In both parables we focus on Jesus and the kingdom of heaven. Then the parable of the net funds its meaning, and the treasure of God’s people becomes clear.
