Years later, that chapter caught up with her in the form of diabetic retinopathy and vision loss.

This conversation isn’t about fear. It’s about being honest about the real consequences of untreated burnout and prolonged high blood sugars, especially during your teens and 20s. It explores how those years can affect your health down the road, and what it looks like to move forward when those consequences become part of your reality.

Katie Beth is a participant in Eledon Pharmaceuticals' clinical trial using an ANTI-CD40L therapy known as tegoprubart. This groundbreaking therapy is a very targeted immunosuppressant that blocks a specific signal in the immune system, rather than suppressing your entire immune system.

One month ago, Katie received a transfusion to implant cadaver islet cells. Today, she's only taking a few units of rapid-acting insulin every day, and her blood sugar is nearly perfect.

The new food pyramid just dropped, and it's left a lot of people with various forms of diabetes feeling confused: 

• "What do we do now?"
• "Who even follows this?"
• "Should I follow this?"

If you have diabetes, you've probably heard it all from your healthcare providers, peers, and strangers over the years:

• "Eat keto."
• "Eat low-carb."
• "Eat paleo."
• "Do intermittent fasting."

Katie Albers was misdiagnosed for 14 years. Her doctor told her she had gestational diabetes during her first pregnancy in 2008. She accepted the answer at first. 

Katie had no idea that the diagnosis would turn into a 14-year medical mystery.

The signs were all there:
- Frequent urination
- Unexpected weight loss
- Severe dehydration
- Poor potassium levels

When things got "bad enough," her doctor finally recommended an emergency room visit. Katie's ketones were dangerously high. That's when she finally got her diagnosis: it was LADA, also known as type 1.5 diabetes.

In this episode of the Diabetes Nerd Podcast, we unpack Katie's journey from then to now, the message she'd share with others, how she learned to be bold with insulin, and keep showing up as the mom she wanted to be.
