While the narrator is AI, the events are true!
What happens when you’ve spent years doing the work, carrying the responsibility, and proving your worth—but still find yourself fighting to be recognised?
In this candid episode of Diary of an NHS Worker, I reflect on a conversation with a colleague about the invisible barriers to career progression in the NHS.
We explore subtle discrimination, workplace politics, professional hierarchy, and the difference between having people who say they support you and those who actually advocate for you.
And then there’s the “glitch”—those repeated oversights, missed invitations, unanswered emails, and broken promises that we keep brushing aside just to protect our peace of mind.
But here’s the question: When does a glitch stop being a mistake and become part of the system?
A personal, thought-provoking reflection on recognition, respect, leadership, and the loneliness of trying to make your voice heard.
Because sometimes, it’s not about the money or the banding. It’s about being seen, being valued, and being heard.
🎙️ Real conversations. Uncomfortable truths. Life behind the NHS badge.

What happens when an NHS teaching session goes completely off-script?
We started with hospital hotels, trouser presses, and my secret identity as Iron Man (yes, I enjoy ironing). Somehow, we ended up discussing green OT capes, broken washing machines, cocktails, embarrassing nightclub stories, and whether a raised toilet seat would fit a gold toilet at Buckingham Palace.
The one thing we didn’t discuss? Attention. Which was supposed to be the subject of our teaching session!
But somewhere between the laughter and ridiculous conversations, something meaningful happened.
We connected—not as clinicians, managers, or colleagues with endless responsibilities, but simply as people.
Sometimes, the most productive meeting is the one where nothing gets done.
We were supposed to learn about attention. Instead, we gave it to one another.
A candid, funny, and heartfelt reflection on NHS life, teamwork, and the human side of healthcare.

Diary of an NHS Worker
My Journey. My Reflections. The Stories Behind the Uniform.
Behind every hospital corridor, every staff interactions, patient encounter,…
Diary of an NHS Worker is my personal journey through life in the National Health Service — a collection of experiences, conversations, confessions, observations and reflections gathered over years of working in healthcare.
Some stories will make you laugh. Others may make you question how things work. And some will remind you of the extraordinary humanity that exists within an often complicated healthcare system.
These are stories about patients, colleagues, leadership, frustrations, small victories, difficult days and the moments that stay with us long after we’ve gone home.
Some episodes are inspired by real conversations and recorded experiences. Names and identifying details have been changed, and some situations may be adapted or combined to protect the privacy of those involved.
This is not an official NHS account. These are my own experiences, perspectives and reflections.
Welcome to Diary of an NHS Worker.
