It's a lot to process on a Wednesday, Dodgers fans, so let's work through it. The biggest news hanging over the team right now is Edwin Díaz going under the knife. He had surgery Tuesday at Kerlan-Jobe to clean out loose bodies in his right elbow, and the club is penciling him in for a three-month absence — meaning you won't see him until at least mid-July at the earliest. The GM has already been asked the obvious question: could Roki Sasaki slide into a high-leverage relief role to fill the void? The answer sounds like a 'we'll see' wrapped in optimism, but don't hold your breath for Sasaki abandoning the rotation anytime soon.
On the brighter side, Mookie Betts is swinging a bat again. He's begun a swing progression as he works back from that right oblique strain suffered April 5, which is genuinely encouraging news. That said, Dave Roberts is being appropriately cautious — we're still looking at weeks, not days, before Mookie's back in the lineup. Progress is progress, though.
Freddie Freeman is back, activated off the paternity list after missing two games for the birth of his daughter. Ryan Ward got the corresponding option back to OKC. Roster math being what it is.
Now, about last night. The Dodgers dropped the opener in San Francisco 3-1, and it was an ugly one — 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and the kind of defense that makes you want to look away. Yamamoto settled in nicely after a rough first inning (2.10 ERA on the season speaks for itself), but the offense gave him nothing to work with. Andy Pages and Will Smith were both out of the lineup, which didn't help matters. One Reddit poster summed it up bluntly: 'We can't win if we are 0-4 with RISP. Terrible batting overall on top of uncoordinated and horrific defense tonight.' Hard to argue.
