The American view of the Cuban Missile Crisis is largely embodied in Dean Rusk's famous quote: "We're eyeball to eyeball, and I think the other guy just blinked." But is that really how it happened? In this brief discussion, I'll look a little deeper behind the scenes at how the crisis was resolved and consider why the historiography of the crisis left out a fundamental character.
