Following World War II, the United States stood victorious, alongside the formidable Soviet Union. These two world superpowers quickly found themselves at odds, and the momentous Cold War began. The 1950's brought about a new frontier to the Cold War; education. With the launch of the Soviet satellite, Sputnik, America faced the realization it was lagging behind it's adversaries when it came to education and technological prowess. Under the direction of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the U.S. looked to Soviet education practices to restore an antiquated educational system.
