Sharmin: Welcome to "Transforming Lives," the podcast where we delve into the conversations that matter. I'm your host Sharmin, and with me, as always, is the fabulous Mitzy. How are you today, Mitzy?
Mitzy: I'm excited, Sharmin. We've got a special show ahead with an incredible guest who has the power to change the way we communicate in those tricky moments at work.
Sharmin: Oh, absolutely. Today we're talking about Difficult Conversation Strategies, and we're honored to have Dr. Michelle Majors with us. Dr. Majors, welcome to the show!
Dr. Michelle Majors: Thank you for having me, Sharmin and Mitzy. I'm thrilled to be here and to share some insights on such an important topic.
Mitzy: So, Dr. Majors, before we dive into the nitty-gritty, could you give our listeners a bit of your background?
Dr. Majors: Of course, Mix. I began my career as a DEI consultant, working with organizations to create more inclusive environments. But over time, I realized that what really drives change are the conversations we have, especially the difficult ones. So now, I focus on being a difficult conversation strategist.
Sharmin: That's quite the journey. And how would you describe your approach to these conversations?
Dr. Majors: Well, Sharmin, I believe in equipping people with the tools they need to navigate challenging discussions in the workplace, helping them handle these talks with both power and grace. It's about empowering others to not only address but also resolve difficult matters effectively.
Mitzy: I think everyone can relate to the nerves that come with high-stakes discussions. Any tips?
Dr. Majors: A lot of it has to do with mindset. Challenge the label of "high stakes" to begin with; it can alleviate some of the pressure. Also, actively validate the other person's perspective and use language that recognizes their feelings and beliefs. It makes a world of difference.
Sharmin: Now, you speak a lot about empathy and emotional intelligence. Why are they so crucial?
Dr. Majors: They're the foundation, Sharmin. Empathy allows us to truly understand each other's positions and emotional intelligence governs our responses. These are not just tools for resolution, but also for healing. They're key to transforming lives through conversation.
Mitzy: Dr. Majors, it's been enlightening. I'm sure our listeners are taking away so much from this discussion.
Dr. Michelle Majors: I hope so, Mix. And I hope they feel empowered to approach their next challenging workplace conversation with a little more confidence.
Sharmin: Thank you so much, Dr. Majors, for joining us today, and to all our listeners, remember that every difficult conversation is an opportunity for growth.
Mitzy: We hope you'll take these strategies and transform your own lives. Until next time, this has been "Transforming Lives." Stay courageous.
Sharmin: Thanks for tuning in. If you've found value in today's episode, don't forget to subscribe to our podcast for more life-changing conversations. We'll see you in the next episode.
