Digital Literacy and Ethics: Navigating Technology in Education

Listen Later

In this episode of my MA Education podcast, I explore the ethical considerations and responsibilities of using technology in the classroom. Drawing on key ideas from Selwyn (2016), Hobbs (2017), Rampal (2023), and the Inspire Learning Programme (Scottish Borders Council, 2023), this episode reflects on how digital technologies shape teaching practices and student experiences.

I discuss important topics such as:

  • The potential of technology to support personalised learning (Knox, 2022)
  • Issues of student privacy and data protection in educational settings
  • The importance of digital citizenship and ethical online behaviour (Hobbs, 2017)
  • The challenge of equitable access to technology and resources
  • The educator’s role in fostering critical digital literacy, beyond technical skills

This episode highlights that technology in education must be used not only creatively but also responsibly. Educators are expected to ensure student wellbeing, protect privacy, and promote inclusion when implementing digital tools in their classrooms.
