Discernment in Missions Leadership

Listen Later

Deep Dive into Biblical Missions: Principles, Priorities, and Practices by Mark Tatlock and Christ Burnett - Fighting through the Fog: Exercising Discernment as a Missions Leader

Modern missions operate within a spiritual fog of war clouded by extrabiblical philosophies and worldly wisdom. To navigate this battlefield, missionaries and church leaders must cultivate biblical discernment, using the Word of God and the Holy Spirit to distinguish divine truth from deceptive ideologies. This requires a commitment to both orthodox doctrine and biblical orthopraxy, ensuring that ministry methods strictly align with scripture. Leaders must guard against adopting secular anthropology or integrationist approaches from compromised educational institutions, remembering that the ultimate goal of missions is transforming the foundational worldview of lost sinners rather than merely altering their cultural aesthetics.

Exercising this biblical fidelity faces distinct regional hurdles. In the Middle East and North Africa, missionaries encounter severe religious and cultural opposition. Because Islamic identity is deeply tied to the community, converting to Christianity can result in harsh legal penalties, including imprisonment or death, depending on the local jurisprudence. Furthermore, converts must navigate strict honor and shame cultural dynamics, risking their marriages, jobs, and lives if their family or community discovers their new faith.

In India, a lack of missiological discernment has led to pragmatic but flawed methods, such as the Indian insider movements. Groups known as Hindu Christ followers claim to believe in Jesus but refuse to publicly identify as Christians or join local churches, choosing instead to covertly remain within their Hindu environment. This approach is unbiblical because it fails to separate from pagan practices, neglects church ordinances like baptism and communion, and relies on intentional deception. True Christian witness demands a clear departure from false religious systems and a visible, public commitment to the local church.
