Ventana Ballet's "The Watchmaker's Song" at the Neill-Cochran House Museum offers a jazzy and interactive re-imagination of "The Nutcracker."

Looking ahead to the new year, Austin is set for significant developments. The $4.5 billion overhaul of I-35, known as the I-35 Capital Express Central project, is underway, which includes widening and lowering parts of the highway and implementing "caps" and "stitches" for pedestrian and bike access. The University of Texas at Austin is seeing the demolition of the Frank Erwin Center to make way for a new hospital in partnership with MD Anderson, part of the city's burgeoning Innovation District.

Other notable developments include the Sixth&Blanco mixed-use project, which will transform two acres of West Sixth Street into retail, hotel, and residential space, and the restoration of Historic Sixth Street by Stream Realty Partners. The Block 21 development, home to ACL Live and the W Austin, is undergoing $40 million in upgrades, while the Wilson Tower, initially planned to be 80 stories tall, is now set to reach 45 stories.

The city's skyline is also changing with the construction of the Waterline tower in the Rainey Street district, expected to be completed in 2026 and featuring the 1 Hotel Austin, luxury apartments, and significant office space. The Confluence project, part of Waterloo Greenway's plan, is adding pedestrian suspension bridges, trails, and public green spaces to the downtown area.

As Austin welcomes the new year, residents and visitors can look forward to a free and family-friendly celebration at Auditorium Shores, featuring live music by The Band of Heathens, food trucks, and a midnight fireworks show as part of Austin’s New Year festivities.
