In "Effect of Motor Control Exercises Versus Graded Activity in Patients With Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial" (March 2012), Luciana MacedoPT, PhD, and colleagues conducted a head-to-head comparison of 2 intervention approaches for low back pain: graded activity and motor control exercise. They found no statistical differences between either intervention in any of the primary and secondary outcomes. In this podcast, Macedo is joined by moderator Steven George, PT, PhD, and Nadine Foster, DPhil, BSc(Hons), MCSP, PGCE, a clinical trials expert and an internationally recognized expert in low back pain, to discuss the clinical implications of these findings. When comparing exercise interventions head to head, do physical therapists need to use different trial designs, change the outcome measures, or consider factors other than outcomes, such as cost effectiveness or patient satisfaction, to determine the superiority of one exercise intervention over another?
