Research on stem cells began in the late 19th century in Europe. The term stem cell was coined to describe the fertilized egg that becomes an organism. In the U.S., the adult stem cells were studied in the 1950s. A cancer researcher found large tumors in the scrotums of mice that contained mixtures of differentiated and undifferentiated cells.
