Displeased With God

Listen Later

Luke 15:25-32 and Jonah 4: 1-11
This week we enter into the last chapter of the book of Jonah. After Nineveh repents, "...Jonah is greatly displeased and angry.” We see in Jonah’s response a very strange reaction from the preacher concerning the reception of his message. Jonah is displeased with God. Like the elder brother, who gets angry with the father for celebrating his son’s return in Jesus' story of the Lost Son, Jonah is angry because of the love God shows to the wicked Assyrians. God never behaves according to our dictates! And if you’ve ever felt displeasure or disappointment with God this message is for you.
Jonah’s attitude demonstrates how it is possible to both believe the gospel and yet not love the God of the gospel. It’s possible that you can be glad for the benefits of the gospel, but not willing to celebrate and share in the joy of repentant sinners that the God of the gospel love. Every Christian struggles with letting the love of God penetrate our stony hearts. The stony heart is only broken when we realize the patience of the Lord’s love. Here in the text we see the pursuit of God’s patient love, the perplexity of his patient love, and the covering his patient love provides.
Tim Keller is right when he says that there are lessons to be learned in this chapter  about the love of God. God's love is long-suffering and endless for his children. And the displeasure with God changes as we continually feel the embrace of the patient love of God found through faith in Christ. For in Christ we find the love of God toiling and laboring, (Jon. 4:10-11) to make us grow into his image…an image of love.
