Disrupting the Recruitment Market with Lisa Betsworth

Listen Later

It’s another one of our real life journeys on Sweat, Grit & Hustle this week as Tracy is joined by recruitment industry expert and owner of Slice Solutions, Lisa Betsworth. A few years ago, Lisa made the decision to stay within her industry, but to disrupt the status quo. Listen to Lisa’s story and find out how giving yourself a break can pay off in the long run.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • On the highstreet you would be lucky to get a 15% fee on your recruitment. Lisa disagrees with these massive fees and wanted to make a better service at about a third of the price. It’s better because it holds the hand of the client through interviews, shortlisting, not just the CV sifting you see most companies doing. That’s why she started Slice Solutions.
  • When she started her first business, Lisa didn’t differentiate herself from the competition, she had no USP and up against the big boys she didn’t stand a chance. She had fallen out of love with the job and after having a child and being diagnosed with cancer, she came back with a new company, Slice, and found her passion again.
  • Recruitment is a very reactionary industry. Clients will often come to you and say I need this and I need it yesterday.
  • When things aren’t going your way it’s easy to feel like you have no control. But you always have the choice of how to deal with adversity. If you let the things you can’t affect get on top of you then you’ll never overcome them, but if you face them head-on then you can.
  • The best piece of advice Lisa can give to people starting out in business is that you should work with people you trust.
  • When recruiting, stop and breathe before you do it. If you get a good gut feeling about someone, then go with it, there’s usually a reason you feel that way.
  • Look for values that you share. You can teach someone skills but you can’t teach them to fit into your business.
  • If you spread your advertising over multiple platforms then you’re more likely to find quality candidates.
  • When writing a job description, be very clear about what you need, if you think you just need an extra pair of hands then re-evaluate.

BEST MOMENTS

‘I’m yet to meet a child who says I want to be a recruiter when I’m older’

‘They either like it or they don’t. If they don’t I’ll send them elsewhere’

‘I’ve seen some of the most amazing businesses spike up during covid’

‘Until someone says I’ve got no hope I’m just going to get on’

ABOUT THE GUEST

Lisa loves the recruitment industry and has been in recruitment for over 15 years, finally starting her own agency in 2014. Unfortunately, Lisa was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and took the decision to sell her agency to a competitor to allow her to take the time to beat cancer and fully recover. And now she has!! She supports hair loss and cancer charities and started Slice in August 2019. Despite its infancy, Slice Solutions already serves a solid client base across the region. Lisa comments, ” It is testament to this service that we were able to hit the ground running as we did, benefiting from word-of-mouth recommendations and a high-level service that engages these clients and the candidates we source.” Lisa adds, “my passion for people and helping them find their perfect position has never wavered and I truly believe Slice Solutions can act as the next stage in the recruitment industry; acting on a retained basis for companies to understand their culture and requirements rather than a bolt-on service used only when necessary”.
