Dive & Dig

Dive & Dig In Depth - Marty Klein

Listen Later

Learn how MIT engineer, Marty Klein developed the now widely used side-scan sonar to find shipwrecks. First developed for the military during WW II – it uses sound to detect ships and other lost objects in the ocean depths. While searching for the elusive monster Nessie in Scotland’s Loch Ness, he went on to find the USS Thresher – the Wellington bomber that plunged into the loch on a training mission. Besides its military applications, side scan sonar was also deployed after the Titanic tragedy to locate icebergs. We hear how Marty has worked with many of the leading ocean explorers, including MIT engineer, Doc Edgerton and ocean explorer Bob Ballard, who went on to discover the Titanic.
