  • Witch Trials Part 1: Europe’s Witch Trials — Catholics, Women & Even Saints Killed | Divine Mysticism Podcast Episode 13

Happy October! 🎃 And of course… what better way to kick off spooky season than talking about witches?

And because apparently we like to be a little too on-the-nose… our 13th episode HAD to be about witches. 🔮

Welcome to Part 1 of our two-part series on witches, where we’re going down the rabbit hole into the European witch trials and the complicated history connecting Catholicism, Pagan traditions, mysticism, magic, and the people accused of witchcraft.

But this isn’t just a story about “witches.”

It’s a story about fear, religion, spirituality, power, persecution, and the people who found themselves caught in the middle.

In this episode, we explore how beliefs about witchcraft developed across medieval and early modern Europe, why certain people became targets, and how Catholicism and Christian beliefs intersected with—and sometimes came into conflict with...older Pagan and folk traditions.

We talk about Catholic mystics, healers, midwives, herbalists, accused witches, and people who were ultimately imprisoned, tortured, or executed. We also dive into some of the fascinating...and sometimes disturbing...stories of individuals caught up in accusations of witchcraft.

And because this is Divine Mysticism, we also explore the spiritual side of the story: the idea of the “witch wound,” past-life connections, mystical experiences, magic, prayer, manifestation, crystals, candles, intention, and why some people feel a deep connection to the history of witchcraft.

🔮 In this episode, we explore:

    • The European Witch Trials

    • Catholicism and accusations of witchcraft

    • Pagan traditions and Christian beliefs

    • Catholic mysticism and spiritual experiences

    • St. Teresa of Avila and The Interior Castle

    • The “witch wound” and healer wound

    • Joan of Arc and her visions

    • Alice Kyteler and Petronilla de Meath

    • Heinrich Kramer and the Malleus Maleficarum

    • King James and European witch hunts

    • Urbain Grandier and the Ursuline possessions

    • Midwives, healers, herbalists, and accusations of witchcraft

    • Magic, prayer, manifestation, and intention

    • Poppets, candles, crystals, and folk magic

    • Why fear and instability helped fuel witch-hunting

    • The Black Death, religious conflict, poverty, famine, and social fear

    • How European beliefs about witchcraft eventually traveled to the Americas

And, as always, we’re asking the bigger questions:

Were the people accused of witchcraft actually practicing magic?

How much of what we now call “witchcraft” came from Pagan traditions, folk practices, or simply misunderstood spiritual practices?

Why were so many women...and some men...targeted?

And what happens when spirituality, religion, fear, and power collide?

    This is only Part 1.

Next, we’ll take the story across the Atlantic and into Colonial America, where the beliefs and fears surrounding witchcraft took on a whole new life.

So grab your coffee(or wine), your crystals, your Catholic rosary, your tarot deck...or whatever makes you feel spiritually protected...and let’s talk about witches. 🔮

  • Mabon: Fall Equinox + Pagan & Catholic Traditions | Divine Mysticism Podcast Ep. 12

What does Mabon, the Fall Equinox, Pagan traditions, Catholicism, harvest rituals, and the changing seasons have in common?

    More than you might think.

In Episode 12 of the Divine Mysticism Podcast, Tasha (Catholic) and Renée (Mystic) go down a fascinating rabbit hole into Mabon, the Fall Equinox, ancient harvest traditions, and the surprising ways seasonal rituals and Catholic traditions can overlap.

What starts with the changing of the seasons quickly turns into a much bigger conversation about harvest, balance, gratitude, ritual, sacred traditions, spirituality, and what happens when ancient seasonal practices meet Christianity.

Tasha and Renée explore Mabon and the history behind the modern Pagan celebration of the Fall Equinox, including the symbolism of harvest, balance, darkness and light, and the transition into the darker half of the year.

And then things get even more interesting.

The conversation takes us into the world of Catholic Ember Days, seasonal prayer, fasting, harvest traditions, and the Catholic practice of marking the changing seasons through the liturgical calendar.

But is there actually a connection between these traditions?

Or are different cultures simply responding to the same natural cycle in their own spiritual language?

From Mabon and the Fall Equinox, to Pagan harvest celebrations, Catholic Ember Days, sacred rituals, Stonehenge, ancient seasonal traditions, and even the mysteries surrounding sacred geometry, Tasha and Renée follow the rabbit hole wherever it leads.

And because this is Divine Mysticism, we're obviously going to ask the bigger question:

When two spiritual traditions have similar rituals and symbols, does that mean one tradition borrowed from the other—or can different traditions arrive at similar spiritual practices independently?

    In this episode:

    • What exactly is Mabon?

    • The history and modern Pagan meaning of Mabon

    • Why Mabon is associated with the Fall Equinox

    • The symbolism of the equinox and the balance between light and darkness

    • Pagan harvest traditions and seasonal rituals

    • The connection between harvest, gratitude and spirituality

    • The darker half of the year and why autumn has such powerful spiritual symbolism

    • The story of Mabon ap Modron and how it became associated with the modern Mabon celebration

    • Mabon, Persephone and the mythology of descent and return

    • The difference between ancient Celtic mythology and modern Pagan interpretations

    • Catholic Ember Days and their connection to the changing seasons

    • Why the Catholic Church traditionally included seasonal prayer, fasting and thanksgiving

    • How Catholic and Pagan traditions can sometimes look surprisingly similar

    • Rituals, offerings, prayer and the meaning we give to sacred actions

    • The relationship between Pagan harvest traditions and Catholic practices

    • The Fall Equinox and the symbolism of balance

    • The difference between historical evidence and modern spiritual interpretations

    • Why seasonal transitions can feel spiritually significant even across completely different belief systems

At the heart of this episode is a bigger question:

Why do so many different spiritual traditions use the changing seasons to understand life, death, balance, gratitude and transformation?

Is Mabon fundamentally different from Catholic harvest traditions?

Can Pagan seasonal practices and Catholic rituals exist alongside each other?

Did Christianity replace older seasonal traditions—or did different cultures simply develop their own ways of making the natural world sacred?

And why does the Fall Equinox seem to inspire so many traditions centered around balance, harvest, gratitude, darkness and spiritual reflection?

Because sometimes the most fascinating part of spirituality isn't finding the answer—it's following the rabbit hole far enough to ask better questions.

We're just two friends going down the rabbit hole.

  • Marie Laveau: Voodoo + Catholicism & Blended Traditions | Divine Mysticism Podcast Ep. 11

What does Marie Laveau, Voodoo, Catholicism, New Orleans, spiritual traditions, and supposedly possessed objects have in common?

    More than you might think.

In Episode 11 of the Divine Mysticism Podcast, Tasha (Catholic) and Renée (Mystic) go down a very unexpected rabbit hole into the life and legacy of Marie Laveau, the legendary Voodoo Queen of New Orleans, and the fascinating ways Voodoo and Catholic traditions became intertwined throughout history.

What starts with Marie Laveau quickly turns into a much bigger conversation about faith, culture, ritual, magic, Catholic saints, spiritual protection, and what happens when different belief systems collide—and ultimately blend together.

Tasha explores Marie Laveau's surprising Catholic connections, from her Catholic baptism and marriage to her connection to St. Louis Cathedral, while Renée explains the historical and spiritual relationship between Voodoo and Catholicism.

And then things get even more interesting.

From Mother Mary and St. Peter appearing alongside Voodoo traditions, to Papa Legba and the crossroads, Marie Laveau's altar, offerings left at her home, and the difference between Voodoo and Hoodoo, this episode explores a side of New Orleans spirituality that is far more complicated than the stereotypes surrounding it.

    But we're not stopping there.

The conversation takes a much darker turn when Tasha and Renée dive into Robert the Doll, the infamous Dybbuk box, paranormal investigations, spiritual attachments, and stories of objects believed to carry dangerous energy.

And because this is Divine Mysticism, we're obviously going to ask the bigger question:

Where does faith end and magic begin?

And if Catholicism itself contains rituals, relics, sacred objects, saints, candles, holy water and sacred oils…how different is ritual in another spiritual tradition?

    In this episode:

    • Who was Marie Laveau, the legendary Voodoo Queen of New Orleans?

    • Marie Laveau's life, family, culture and connection to New Orleans

    • Her Catholic baptism, marriage and burial

    • The surprising Catholic connections surrounding Marie Laveau

    • Why Voodoo and Catholicism became intertwined

    • The difference between Voodoo and Hoodoo

    • Why Catholic saints became incorporated into Voodoo traditions

    • Papa Legba and St. Peter and their connection to the crossroads

    • Marie Laveau's altar and her connection to Catholic imagery

    • Why Marie Laveau became such an important figure in her community

    • Her work as a hairdresser and how it gave her access to New Orleans' elite society

    • The secrets people supposedly shared with their hairdresser—and why that made Marie Laveau so influential 😂

    • Offerings left at Marie Laveau's home & Why people leave hair clips, pins and other objects as offerings

    • The French, Spanish, Creole and African influences woven into New Orleans culture

    • Marie Laveau's connection to St. Anne Street

    • The strange stories surrounding St. Louis Cathedral

    • The legend of the priest supposedly seen inside the cathedral

    • Robert the Doll and the stories surrounding his reputation

    • The infamous Dybbuk box

    • Stories of paranormal investigators encountering spiritually charged objects

    • The Cecil Hotel and the paranormal investigations surrounding it

    • The idea that different cultures developed spiritual practices as a way to protect themselves and their communities

At the heart of this episode is a bigger question:

What happens when two spiritual traditions that seem completely different actually have more in common than we realize?

Can Catholic saints exist alongside Voodoo traditions?

Can a sacred object be a source of protection—or something more?

    Is ritual automatically “magic”?

And why are we so quick to call another culture's spiritual practices dark, dangerous or evil when our own traditions contain rituals that might look just as mysterious to an outsider?

Tasha and Renée don't necessarily agree on everything.

And that's exactly why this conversation is so interesting.

Because sometimes the most fascinating part of spirituality isn't finding the answer—it's following the rabbit hole far enough to ask better questions.

We're just two friends going down the rabbit hole.

  • Pumpkin Spice: Magic + Biblical Meanings? | Divine Mysticism Podcast Ep. 10

What does pumpkin spice have to do with Catholicism, ancient rituals, biblical anointing oils, herbal magic, and mysticism?

    More than you might think.

In Episode 10 of the Divine Mysticism Podcast, Tasha (Catholic) and Renée (Mystic) follow the scent of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger and allspice down a very unexpected rabbit hole.

What starts with pumpkin spice season quickly turns into a fascinating conversation about the spiritual symbolism of herbs and spices, the ancient traditions surrounding them, and the question of whether using plants and natural ingredients in spiritual practices is inherently at odds with Christianity.

Tasha explores the biblical connection to Moses and the sacred anointing oil described in Exodus, while Renée dives into the traditional energetic and magical associations of seasonal herbs—including their connections to fire, planets, abundance, protection, love and intention.

Then things get even more interesting.

From Jonah's mysterious gourd and Cinderella's magical pumpkin to Egyptian mummification, biblical anointing, Jesus' burial, Saint Hildegard of Bingen's “joy cookies,” cinnamon rituals, and the strange reality that too much nutmeg can actually produce psychoactive effects…this episode has a little bit of everything.

And because this is Divine Mysticism, we're obviously going to ask the bigger question:

Where is the line between spiritual symbolism, ritual, magic and faith?

    In this episode:

    • Why pumpkin spice creates such a strong feeling of warmth, comfort and nostalgia

    • The seasonal origins of pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, ginger and allspice

    • Pumpkin symbolism, fertility, abundance, creativity and harvest traditions

    • The mysterious gourd that appears in the Book of Jonah

    • Why Tasha immediately connected Jonah's gourd to Cinderella's magical pumpkin

    • Cinderella, the Fairy Godmother and possible Christian/Catholic symbolism

    • Why blue and white can evoke imagery associated with the Virgin Mary

    • The history and symbolism of seasonal herbs and spices

    • Cinnamon, fire, warmth, protection, abundance and intention

    • The traditional planetary and elemental associations of herbs

    • Egyptian mummification and the use of aromatic substances

    • The sacred anointing oil described in Exodus and the ingredients God instructed Moses to use

    • Catholic holy oils and the role of Sacred Chrism

    • Why herbs and natural substances appear throughout biblical and Catholic traditions

    • Saint Hildegard of Bingen and her writings on cinnamon, nutmeg and clove

    • Hildegard's famous “joy cookies”

    • How medieval herbal medicine and spirituality overlapped

    • Ginger, clove, nutmeg and allspice—and their traditional uses and symbolism

    • The mystical idea that intention gives ritual its meaning

    • The difference between using something as a spiritual tool and worshiping it

    • The first-of-the-month cinnamon ritual you've probably seen all over TikTok

    • Blowing cinnamon through the front door for abundance, prosperity, luck and protection

    • Why the beginning of a month can symbolize a new beginning

    • Biblical herbs, spices and fragrances connected to Jesus

    • The women who went to Jesus' tomb with spices after his death

    • Myrrh, frankincense and other aromatic substances in biblical tradition

    • Why Tasha's dad may have been onto something about nutmeg 😂

    • The surprising psychoactive effects of consuming excessive amounts of nutmeg

    • The connection between scent, memory and unexpected spiritual experiences

    • And why sometimes you smell something when there seems to be absolutely no reason for it

At the heart of this episode is a bigger question:

If God created the plants, herbs, spices and natural world around us, can they have spiritual symbolism without becoming objects of worship?

    Is ritual automatically “magic”?

Is magic automatically incompatible with faith?

And can two people—one Catholic and one mystic—look at the exact same cinnamon stick and see something completely different?

Maybe the answer isn't as black and white as we think.

And as always, we're not claiming to have all the answers.

We're just two friends going down the rabbit hole.

  • Crystals: Pagan Practice & Catholic Tradition from the Bible? | Divine Mysticism Podcast Ep. 9

Are crystals a pagan practice—or have they actually been part of Christian and Catholic tradition for centuries?

In Episode 9 of the Divine Mysticism Podcast, Tasha (Catholic) and Renée (mystic) dive into the fascinating and sometimes controversial relationship between crystals, paganism, Christianity and Catholic mysticism.

Why are crystals so often associated with the occult? Can you use a crystal without worshiping it? And if crystals are considered “pagan,” what do we make of the gemstones and sacred stones found throughout the Bible and Catholic tradition?

Tasha and Renée explore the symbolism of crystals and gemstones, the difference between worship and spiritual practice, and the ways different traditions have understood the natural world as a connection between the physical and spiritual.

And because this is Divine Mysticism, they obviously go down a few unexpected rabbit holes.

From haunted houses and mysterious nighttime experiences to Lemurian crystals, Aaron's breastplate, biblical references to precious stones, Saint Hildegard of Bingen, ley lines, sacred sites, birthstones, and one very questionable selenite ashtray...somehow, it all comes back to crystals.

    In this episode:

    • Why crystals are associated with paganism and witchcraft

    • Can Christians use crystals without worshiping them?

    • Pagan traditions and the spiritual symbolism of stones

    • Catholicism, sacred objects and gemstones

    • Crystals, intention, belief and energy

    • Why a rosary is considered sacred while crystals can be viewed as occult

    • What the Bible actually says about precious stones

    • The twelve stones on Aaron's breastplate

    • Precious stones in Job, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Revelation

    • Saint Hildegard of Bingen and her writings about stones and the natural world

    • Lemurian crystals and the idea of crystals as “record keepers”

    • Haunted houses, objects and the energy we believe they can carry

    • Tasha's husband's mysterious nighttime experiences with seeing “metal spiders”

    • Ley lines, sacred sites and mystical traditions

    • Diamonds, birthstones and the symbolism of purity

    • Why imperfect crystals can still be beautiful

    • And the story of a selenite bowl that became an ashtray 😂

At the center of the conversation is one big question:

Are crystals inherently pagan—or can something created by God also hold spiritual meaning without becoming an object of worship?

Maybe the answer isn't as black and white as we think.

And as always, we're not claiming to have all the answers.

  • Catholic Altars, Witch Altars & the Sacred Space Between | Divine Mysticism Podcast Ep. 8

What exactly is an altar? Is it simply a place to pray—or can it become a physical connection between the spiritual and physical worlds?

In Episode 8 of the Divine Mysticism Podcast, Tasha (Catholic) and Renée (mystic) dive into the meaning, history and symbolism of altars across Catholicism, mysticism and other spiritual traditions.

They talk about Catholic church altars, home altars, sacred objects, prayer, offerings, the four elements, traveling altars, and why creating a physical sacred space can help us connect with something beyond ourselves.

And because this is Divine Mysticism, they obviously get distracted a few times along the way.

From a mysterious spirit named George and a missing bowling ball to the Ark of the Covenant, Indiana Jones, the Egyptian Ankh, the Third Temple, fertility, sacred union and why Tasha apparently has an altar for everything...somehow, it all keeps coming back to the altar.

    In this episode:

    • What is an altar?

    • Why humans have created sacred spaces throughout history

    • Catholic altars vs. mystical and pagan altars

    • Home altars and creating sacred space

    • The four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water

    • What to put on an altar

    • Prayer, intention and offerings

    • Catholic church altars, the Eucharist and the tabernacle

    • Why priests kiss the altar

    • The Ark of the Covenant and Indiana Jones...because obviously

    • The Ankh, sacred union and ancient symbolism

    • The Third Temple and a few unexpected theological rabbit holes

    • Why ceremony can help ground spirituality into everyday life

At the center of the conversation is one simple idea:

Maybe the altar isn't just a physical place. Maybe it's a reflection of what's happening within us.

And as always, we're not claiming to have all the answers.

We're just two friends going down the rabbit hole.

  • The Assumption of Mary, Gods & Stuff | Divine Mysticism Podcast Ep. 7

What is the difference between Jesus' Ascension and Mary's Assumption? Where do saints, angels, archangels, ascended masters, gods and goddesses fit into the spiritual hierarchy?

In Episode 7 of the Divine Mysticism Podcast, Tasha (Catholic) and Renée (mystic) fall down another unexpected rabbit hole...starting with the Catholic feast of the Assumption of Mary and ending up exploring the mysterious hierarchy of angels, saints, gods, goddesses, ascended masters, spiritual realms, consciousness, and what might happen to the soul after death.

The conversation also takes some very personal turns as Renée shares her experiences with past lives, spiritual guides, mediumship, and receiving information when she is ready for it, while Tasha explores these ideas through the lens of Catholicism, faith, Scripture, and the Catholic understanding of Heaven.

And, as always, the conversation doesn't exactly stay where it started.

    In this episode:

    • The Catholic Feast of the Assumption of Mary

    • What is the difference between the Assumption and the Ascension?

    • Why Catholics believe Mary was assumed into Heaven

    • The story of Mary's girdle and the disappearance of her body

    • Sister Anne Catherine Emmerich and remote viewing of Mary's house

    • Could Mary be considered a goddess from a mystical perspective?

    • Saints, angels, archangels and the hierarchy of Heaven

    • Enoch, Elijah and the mystery of being taken into Heaven

    • Seraphim, cherubim, dominions and different angelic orders

    • How Catholic concepts of Heaven compare with mystical ideas of spiritual hierarchy

    • Gods and goddesses across different spiritual traditions

    • Ascended masters and the concept of spiritual evolution

    • Dimensions, consciousness and the idea of higher realms

    • Spirit guides, guardian angels and departed loved ones

    • What does it mean to become spiritually “higher” or more conscious?

    • Past lives, reincarnation and the idea of soul lessons

    • Mediumship and communicating with the seen and unseen worlds

    • Spiritual discernment, spiritual hygiene and staying anchored in the light

    • Why Tasha and Renée believe questioning doesn't have to mean rejecting your faith

    • Why conversations about spirituality make people uncomfortable

    • Can different spiritual traditions be describing the same mysteries using different language?

This episode is not about telling you what to believe.

    It's about asking questions.

Because sometimes the biggest spiritual questions aren't the ones we have answers to.

They're the ones we're brave enough to ask.

Whether you're Catholic, Christian, interested in mysticism, fascinated by angels and spiritual beings, curious about reincarnation and past lives, or simply wondering what happens to consciousness after death, this conversation invites you to explore these mysteries with curiosity rather than fear.

And remember... we're not claiming to have all the answers. We're just two friends going down the rabbit hole.

  • Mary Magdalene: Apostle to the Apostles, Lost Gospel & the Divine Feminine | Divine Mysticism Podcast Ep. 4

Was Mary Magdalene simply one of Jesus' closest disciples or was she something more?

Could the Gospel of Philip, the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, and ancient Christian traditions reveal a deeper relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene? And how does the Catholic Church understand one of Christianity's most misunderstood women?

In Episode 4 of Divine Mysticism, Tasha (Catholic) and Renee (mystic) begin a two-part exploration into the life of Mary Magdalene by examining both Catholic teaching and early Christian mystical traditions.

Tasha explores Mary Magdalene through Scripture and Catholic history, discussing why she is honored as the "Apostle to the Apostles," how Pope Gregory's sermon shaped her reputation for over 1,400 years, and how Vatican II & Pope Francis restored her importance within the Church. She also examines the questions that continue to fascinate historians and believers alike: Was Mary Magdalene more than a disciple? Could the Wedding at Cana have been Jesus and Mary Magdalene's wedding? Why did Jesus' relationship with Mary appear to challenge Jewish customs surrounding men, women, and rabbis?

Renee then explores the Gospel of Mary Magdalene, tracing the origins of these ancient writings, how they were discovered, and why they were never included in the biblical canon. Together they discuss the famous passage describing Jesus kissing Mary Magdalene, Peter's challenge to Mary's authority after the Resurrection, the symbolism of the seven demons, and how early Christian mysticism presents Mary Magdalene as a powerful spiritual teacher whose influence continues to inspire millions today.

Rather than offering definitive answers, this episode invites listeners to thoughtfully explore both Catholic tradition and early Christian mystical perspectives surrounding one of the greatest mysteries in Christian history.

    In this episode:

    • Mary Magdalene in Catholic tradition

    • Why she is called the "Apostle to the Apostles"

    • Pope Gregory and the 1,400-year misunderstanding of Mary Magdalene

    • Pope Francis' restoration of her feast day

    • Why the Gospel of Mary wasn't included in the Bible
