The final escape from Egypt by the Israelites came at a terrible cost. The scripture tells us that the cost is not what should be celebrated, but the escape. Every year we are called to remember the escape from literal slavery and death, and to celebrate. We celebrate when we make cause with people being held in prison without cause, when we make cause with people who suffer from violence, and when we recognize oppression that causes people to fear for their lives.
