Psalm 127: 1 

Unless the Lord builds the house,

    the builders labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

    the guards stand watch in vain.

In vain you rise early

    and stay up late,

toiling for food to eat—

    for he grants sleep to those he loves.

The point of this Psalm is simply this: If God ain’t in it… it’s pointless. 

Vain = no value

“One of the most telling features of this short poem is that it singles out three of our most universal preoccupations—building, security, raising a family—and makes us ask what they all amount to, and to whom we owe them.”

The Great Wall of China was built to defend China from outside invaders. The wall is over 4,000 miles long and over 20 feet high. Its width ranges from 12 to 40 feet in places. It took over 22 centuries to build, and millions of men and even More Millions of hours to build… That’s about as secure as you can get, but the Mongols still got into China. You know how? They didn’t breach the walls. They simply bribed the guards.

You see, unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. You might think you’re invincible, that you’ve got all the bases covered.

Thomas Manton wrote: “Labor without God cannot prosper, and labor against God will surely fail.” You need to keep God in everything you do. 

Noah builds an Ark. Everyone thought it was in vain… but not to Noah. What we build here at HillSpring some might think is in vain, they might doubt our ability, our mission or even our ability to make a difference… but we labor not in vain, but in the Lord. 

If something is being built… You don’t want to hear “Garth is building it”. You would rather hear “Scott is building it… Tom is building it, Brian is building it…” ANYONE BUT GARTH. 

Much in the same way regarding HillSpring church do you want to hear “Garth is building it…” Rather we all strive to have God build the Church! 

The world is full of opportunities… but unless the foundation of those opportunities is God, it means nothing. Here is the secret…

It might even be a success - but might still be useless.
