Welcome to Part 2 of d.i.y.BreakUp! You heard it right. Do it yourself breakup! In this episode I am chatting with co-founder Jessica Heilweil, Devin Allen’s friend and business partner. Unlike Devin, Jessica grew up not feeling the societal pressures of getting married and having a family. However, when Jessica and her husband Joe got engaged everything started to change. Jessica and her then fiancé experienced the pressure and expectations of having a traditional American wedding. Something that they never originally wanted.
Unfortunately, they caved and went the traditional route, spending a lot of money and saying yes to things that they didn’t care about. As a result, wedding planning created a lot of stress. Jessica believes that she started listening to her intuition once she decided to cancel the prepaid wedding plans and celebrate the way her and Joe really wanted: by hosting a backyard BBQ wedding with close friends and family!
In this episode of Leading With Your Gut, Jessica shares the stress and frustration of losing money and not having a community to reach out to. Through the creation of d.i.yBreakUP, Jessica and her business partner Devin built an online community for people who need connection, tips, advice, and strategies for calling off a wedding and recouping money.
Jessica reminds us to follow our intuition when it comes to planning a wedding and to be careful of getting carried away in hopes of pleasing other people. She says, “The marriage is the end goal and the wedding is just the pit stop.”
